Indie Friday and the Just a Card campaign

Independent Shops Indie Friday Shopping Small Business

Friday the 24th of November is Black Friday, a shopping day that originated in America (it’s the day after Thanksgiving Day), where large retailers have special promotions and people queue up in the cold to buy cheap TVs. As a new, small business there is no way we can possibly compete with large retailers and so when I first saw an Instagram story posted by @SocialMouthSam about Indie Friday my heart filled with joy.

So what is Indie Friday? Indie Friday is a day to celebrate “all things colourful, passionate and independent”. It is organised by Just A Card, a campaign that aims to encourage people to buy a card (or any other item) from independent makers, designers and shops. These small purchases are vital to independent businesses and the campaign does a fantastic job of highlighting the work of makers and designers. On Indie Friday makers and independent shop owners will be showcasing their wonderful wares across social media- use the hashtag #JACIndieFriday to follow all the fun.

Here at The Dog Edit we’ll be participating in Indie Friday and we hope you’ll enjoy our social media posts on the day. We have also pledged to buy all our Christmas presents from small businesses this year! No traipsing in and out of overheated busy chain stores or ordering from Amazon for us!

And that’s where we’d love your help. There are lots of amazing small businesses out there and we are so lucky to be surrounded by them in Edinburgh but we’d love to hear your suggestions for places to find special gifts for all the family. Please leave a comment if you have any suggestions, I’d love to do a Christmas gift guide in the next couple of weeks based on your recommendations.

To start the ball rolling, one of my favourite local businesses is Lucky Cloud Skincare. Lucky Cloud make natural, vegan skincare products that smell divine and are as good as, if not better than the mass-produced high end skincare you’d find in a department store.

My favourite products are the Super Soothing Balm with Lavender and Rose Geranium and the Coconut Lip Butter. In fact, I love the lip butters so much that they are going to be available in the Treats for Owners section of our shop very soon! I first found out about Lucky Cloud when I saw their stall at the Edinburgh Indoor Market but you can buy all of their products online. Lucy, the founder of Lucky Cloud Skincare, is lovely and very knowledgeable about all things skincare so if you have a chance to pop down to the monthly Indoor Market, definitely check out her stall.
